In need of some inspiration for creating poetry? No problem! Blackout poetry is an easy way to refurbish books, magazines, and newspapers into poetic and visual artworks.
There are many different types and styles of poetry, but today we are focusing on the unique blackout poetry. Blackout poems use words already written on a page. The creation of the poem comes from crossing out unused words to create new meaning.
Supplies Needed:
- A Pencil
- A black marker or pen
- An old book, magazine or newspaper
How to Create Blackout Poetry:
- Skim through your book, magazine or newspaper to find a page with interesting words. Remove the page and set aside.
- Using a pencil, circle interesting words you want to keep. After circling some of the words, you can get an idea of the story you want to tell.
- Once you have an outline of your poem in place, use a black marker to cross out the other words, around the circled words, on the page. Pay careful attention to what you are crossing out, as you can’t remove the marker.
- Erase any pencil marks and read through your new blackout poem.
